Evolution for Beginners - Session I

Event
Description

Evolution for Beginners - Reintroduction to Biology
Wondering what all the fuss is about regarding what you read about evolution? Join us in getting to the bottom of these fascinating new insights as to how living systems interact with one another. These sessions are intended for folks who would just like to get the facts as best as we can know at this point in time, and then make up their own minds regarding evolution, nature and their own spirituality. There are no learning prerequisites required for this seminar.
Feb - May

2007

These learning sessions are geared to ordinary folks (non scientists) who would like to delve into the emerging studies of evolutionary biology and evo - devo (evolutionary development). These sessions are specifically designed for learners who may not have been exposed to more recent developments and concepts in biology. This seminar will study contemporary theories in evolution in order to allow participants to form their own opinions regarding evolution, nature and any associations or connections to their own belief systems.

In order to prepare for debating the potential evolution of the first living creatures on Earth, this course will provide an extremely cursory introduction to current theories regarding matter and the formation of the universe, our solar system and finally our planet. Then the course will review the most recent theories regarding the formation of the first organic, replicating components. Session I studies will then continue by reviewing the proposed transition of living organisms through the first two kingdoms of life which are the bacteria and the protoctista (the generally single celled organisms). These sessions will conclude by introducing possible transitions from the protist lines to the earliest forms of animal life. Special attention will be allocated to cover various possibilities, theories and arguments both for and against key evolutionary transition stages. Topics will include:

* Introduction to organic molecules and the first elementary living cells.

* DNA, RNA, chromosomes, genetic basics, viruses and Prions.

* The robust endosymbiotic evidence for evolution in animal lines - the mitochondria.

* The key evolutionary transitions I, II and III - the first replicating cells, the transition to the eukaryotes (non bacteria) and then finally Darwin's classic evolution of later species.

* DNA "change system" engineering, the evolution of genders, simple and advanced mechanisms of genome variation.

* The transition from selfish to selfless cells.

* The current debates regarding the potential levels where "natural selection" may act in order to change species over time - gene level, individual level, group level, kin level, etc. An introduction to the "selfish gene" theories will also be covered.

These workgroups consist of two hour sessions which occur twice per month. The first hour consists of instruction followed by coffee, tea and refreshments. The second hour involves group discussion and review.

This seminar is $85 for ten sessions which includes handouts, refreshments and excellent conversation. Full payment is required at time of registration.

* Proposed Session II will cover the theoretical evolutionary pathways involving the animals beginning with the event known as the "Cambrian Explosion" and cumulating with the advent of the primates. prerequisite - Session I or equivalent.

* Proposed Session III will cover the theoretical evolutionary pathways of the primates, human development, social and sexual systems and possible genetic foundations of present human behaviors. prerequisite - Session I or equivalent.
