These learning sessions are geared to non-technology business people who have responsibility for the information technology decisions or planning at small or medium sized businesses. These sessions are specifically designed for learners who may not have any formal training or background in the Information Technologies. However, the individualized nature of this course will provide participants time to explore the technical aspects of computer hardware, networks, computer applications, etc. as required.
Topics will include:
* Introduction to the Windows desktop.
* Cursory introduction to desktop PC hardware, purchasing, simple troubleshooting, simple hardware malfunction triage.
* Planning for basic Windows operating system maintenance, Windows Updates, System Tools, Disk Defragmentation and Disk Repair.
* Introduction, planning and purchasing of Anti-virus, firewalls and system backup software and hardware.
* The basics of computer, file and network security as applicable to your own work environment.
* Introduction to small business computer networking and wireless networking concepts. Introduction to network printers and network servers, voice over IP, (computerized telephones), etc.
* Introduction to web page concepts for purchasing, planning and design purposes. Setting up a web site, registering your own web domain, uploading files to your web site will be covered.
* Each of these subject areas will be discussed in regards to potential to perform "in-house" or when services need to be hired out. A review of expected costs for various services, hardware and software will be discussed.
* A discussion involving the training needs of your staff will be included from the standpoint of not repeating mistakes and in order to minimize needless computer or software outages, lost work, redone work, etc.
* Discussions will cover if Open Source (so called "free" software) may be appropriate for your organization and whether or not refurbished or used hardware should be considered for an organization.
This seminar is $165 for five, four hour sessions which includes handouts and refreshments. Each participant will have their own Windows wireless laptop during class. Full payment is required at time of registration.
