Introduction to a Windows Server and Network Environment for Small and Medium Sized Businesses
This workshop consists of five, five hour sessions. The course is designed for anyone who needs to have a basic understanding of the equipment, software and methods needed to migrate to or manage a Windows server environment. These sessions are suited for people who consider themselves advanced PC users. Non-technical business people can also use this workshop in order to learn what costs, advantages and disadvantages are involved with a move to a server computing environment.

These learning sessions are geared to technology savvy business people who have responsibility for the information technology decisions or planning involved with a Windows server and networked environment. These sessions are specifically designed for learners who may not have any formal training or background in the Information Technologies.

Topics will include:

* The basics involving Windows server installation and configuration.

* The networked aspects of the Windows Professional desktop.

* Windows domain design aspects, Domain Naming Services (DNS), a review of Windows server related services.

* Introduction to Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services.

* Introduction to related server network infrastructure, purchasing and costs (routers, switches, hubs, patch panels).

* Planning for basic Windows operating system capabilities as expanded by a Windows 2003 server to include : network accounts, print services, file services, terminal services, automatic desktop software installations, Windows updates and patch management.

* Introduction and planning regarding network account administration.

* The basics of computer, file and network security as applicable to a server environment.

* Introduction to small business computer networking and wireless networking concepts. Introduction to network printers and network servers, voice over IP, (computerized telephones), etc.

* The integration of server based applications such as anti virus control, office productivity applications, e-mail applications, web page hosting, etc.

* Integration and upgrades with older Windows servers : NT Server, 2000 Server.

* An introduction to system backups, costs and disaster control.

* Each of these subject areas will be discussed in regards to potential to perform "in-house" or when services need to be hired out. A review of expected costs for various services, hardware and software will be discussed.

* A discussion involving the training needs of your staff will be included from the standpoint of the learning curve and required skill set for various server related processes : scripting, administration, maintenance, oversight, etc.

This seminar is $175 for five, five hour sessions which includes hands on labs, handouts and refreshments. Class size is limited to six participants. Each participant will have their own Windows wireless laptop during class. Full payment is required at time of registration.
