We share the farm house, barn and grounds with many smaller creatures that seem to inhabit every nook and cranny. There is never a dull moment on the farm and though small, this assortment of pets and domestic fowl keep us on our toes from dawn (thanks to the roosters)...to dusk.
We raise Aracauna chickens and most years we incubate and hatch some 100 - 200 chicks. The Aracaunas are a minor breed that are good for meat and eggs and they lay blue or pink eggs. The "girls" slow down their laying when the days get short but we turn on timed, lights to extend their day allowing us to get eggs all year long.
Then there are the cats. We have three barn cats whose job is to keep rodents from establishing permanent residence anywhere near the house or barn. Harry, Yoda and Phoebe are all extremely good at their jobs and each has their own unique personality. There is almost always at least one cat in your line of sight if you know where to look for them..
Bridget is our Welsh Corgi and she is classified officially as a working dog although we are challenged to catch her in the act. She does try to herd children and does not tolerate rough play in the house. Even the parents have to relinquish control to Bridget when it comes to roughhousing on the farm. Between Midnight outside and Bridget inside, we are generally alerted to any goings on near the farm.
