Photo Gallery - Small Creatures

cricket the bunny

We share the farm house, barn and grounds with many smaller creatures that seem to inhabit every nook and cranny. There is never a dull moment on the farm and though small, this assortment of pets and domestic fowl keep us on our toes from dawn (thanks to the roosters)...to dusk.

We raise Aracauna chickens and most years we incubate and hatch some 100 - 200 chicks. The Aracaunas are a minor breed that are good for meat and eggs and they lay blue or pink eggs. The "girls" slow down their laying when the days get short but we turn on timed, lights to extend their day allowing us to get eggs all year long.

Then there are the cats. We have three barn cats whose job is to keep rodents from establishing permanent residence anywhere near the house or barn. Harry, Yoda and Phoebe are all extremely good at their jobs and each has their own unique personality. There is almost always at least one cat in your line of sight if you know where to look for them..

Bridget is our Welsh Corgi and she is classified officially as a working dog although we are challenged to catch her in the act. She does try to herd children and does not tolerate rough play in the house. Even the parents have to relinquish control to Bridget when it comes to roughhousing on the farm. Between Midnight outside and Bridget inside, we are generally alerted to any goings on near the farm.

This is a photo of Bridget when she was a puppy. Bridget is a Welsh Pembroke Corgi.

Harry the Cat
Harry

Harry was dropped of at the farm in the middle of the night when he was a kitten. He is very friendly and is the oldest cat on the farm.

Lucy another cat
Lucy

Lucy is no longer with us but was just an incredibly good cat and very beautiful. We enjoy thinking about her. She was as friendly as Harry and so much more mature than Yoda and not nearly as stuck up as Phoebe.

Phoebe a stuck up cat
Phoebe

Phoebe is the kind of cat who gives the feline population their reputation for being aloof and flighty. It appears extremely challenging for Phoebe to make up her mind to do just about anything. Phoebe is very handsome though, and she gets much more friendly after dusk (go figure). After 7 or 8 PM she also enjoys being hand carried to the barn. During daylight hours it is all you can do to have her give you the privilege of patting her.
Yoda a playful cat
Yoda

Yoda is the little trickster on the farm. Yoda will perform high speed runs and will wait in ambush for any living creature great or small. Many items have been dropped with great exasperation due to Yoda's seemingly endless ability to ambush anyone at extremely high velocities from out of nowhere. Here he is shown with his good friend Cricket, who also enjoys sharing high speed runs with Yoda.
Aracauna hen
The Hens

Aracauna chickens come in many colors but all hens lay either blue - green or pink eggs.
Aracauna chicks
Chicks

The only problem with Aracauna chicks is that they end up growing up to be Aracauna hens and roosters who are not nearly as fuzzy or as cute. Each year we try to "imprint" at least one chick so she will follow us around wherever we go. Imprinting chicks is wicked fun for kids.
